FROMPTON HOME SWEAT HOME

Carl Frampton will get the chance to become a three- weight world champion in his home city, Belfast. Frank Warren and Bob Arum will co-promote his challenge for Jamel Herring’s WBO super-featherweight title when the former two-weight world champion has recovered from surgery on both hands.

“Herring has agreed to go to Belfast and that is the fight we will do as soon as Frampton is fit to fight again,” Arum insisted. Frampton, 32, believes he will be ready to fight by May, having suffered fractures in both hands during his win over Tyler McCreary in Las Vegas in November. He had previously broken his left hand in a freak accident at a hotel lobby in Philadelphia, forcing the cancellation of a fight.

He first became a world champion in Belfast in 2014 when he took the IBF featherweight title from Kiko Martinez on a freezing night outdoors in the dockside area of the city. He became a two- weight world champion when he beat Leo Santa Cruz in New York in 2016.

His last fight in Belfast was in August 2018, when he stopped Luke Jackson at Windsor Park, Northern Ireland’s national football stadium. At the time he said that he feared it could be the last time he would box in the city.
